okay ladies, a trivial, fun question. i'm in the process of creating a black arm tattoo for myself and am suddenly fraught with anxiety over whether it should be in color. the design i'm making would be pure black and involve a medley of swirlies down my left arm, the figures of which won't compute to the average person but which will contain lots of significance for me. what's your gut instinct: involve color or keep the black tattoo ideas?

Tue, July 10, 2007 - 2:55 PMI love color, myself. I don't have much work, YET, but my girl is covered and I love it. She has one complete sleeve on her right arm, and it's full color. Lot's of red (fire is the main theme) and it's beautiful...
Here are two shots of it:

But, ultimately, you should go with your gut. You will be the one wearing it for the rest of your life... -

Re: tattoo advice
Tue, July 10, 2007 - 10:58 PMI'm about to get a black tattoo down my left arm.
It's gonna be tribal and there will be a deep maroon interwoven in it.
Personally, looking at may tats on the arms of people at my gym,
I dont like the color ones as much as the black or singular color ones.
Depending on the design, i think color detracts. If it's a specific design, like a picture of something
then color could enhance it. But if it's more abstract, I think color detracts.
I vote for less color and have them use shading for depth. -

sounds like you could add some righteous blues to the swirls to give it some color.

Sun, July 15, 2007 - 8:28 AMThe sleve looks good and the kitty in the yoga kitty looks like a furrier version of my cat Bustopher (aka Bubba Pher or Bubba ), at this time I only have one and need to get the money together to finish off the half sleeve that I want and yes it will be color.
I will put my boy Chorn(tat) in my pictures area.

Re: tattoo advice
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 10:14 PMI say, it doesnt matter what *anybody* else thinks but you! You will be wearing your choice for the rest of your life, so take your time to decide. I've seen beautiful black-only, gorgeous black and grey with splashes of color thrown in, or.. my personal favorite, color all the way. ;) It can all look good as long as it's WELL DONE! So pick a good artist and a good design and go with your gut instict.. and it sounds like your instinct is to go with all black. Dont forget... you can always add color later if you just dont like the black-only.. but you cant take it away if you start with it.
Good luck and enjoy!

Sat, July 14, 2007 - 11:27 PMThis really needs to be about you -- it's your tat, your body and your significance.
What caused the worry? Are you second guessing? What does your heart say?

Re: tattoo advice
Tue, July 17, 2007 - 12:26 AMi like both, i have a two colours right now and a black one...everyone seems to love them, i love them. if colour better helps demonstrate the symbols, then go for it. i would suggest talking to your artist about it as well, they have good insight about colour and black. my black one may still get some colour to it. im getting flames on my left ankle in august...i cant wait!!!
